If you wish to keep your knowledge of Kayla's past organic, skip reading this section! ))Kayla didn't start The Golden Leaf - it's a family business, which she inherited in its entirety, along with all the company's wealth a few years ago when her parents deemed her to be old and skilled enough to take over. She was raised from birth to be a successor to the business, and it worked. She's extremely skilled, though it does feel like her fate was decided for her, and that she was never able to actually pursue other interests. Her parents are now retired in Ul'Dah.It's no secret that Kayla is extremely wealthy, but she keeps hidden just how wealthy she actually is. In truth, Kayla is rich enough that she could join Ul'Dah's syndicate if she desired, though she hides most of her money so that she doesn't get pressured into politics, having a strong distaste for such things. She also keeps that a secret due to the fact that a single goldsmithing company could not possibly amass that much wealth legitimately. Much of the Gil she owns is dirty, with her parents having been involved in many shady dealings before she took over. Kayla may still have some of these connections today.Kayla has an extremely skewed perception of wealth. Having grown up rich from birth, the amount of Gil she owns hasn't corrupted her simply because she has no idea what life is like without it, and has never had any reason to pursue it.Her responsibilities for the company are constantly at odds with her desires and personality in her private life, which is why 'Kayla the businesswoman' and 'Kayla the person' who people meet when she goes out to venues are basically two different people. Her childlike wonder, excitement, and cheerfulness may be her expressing herself the way she never got to when she was young.Kayla doesn't make money anywhere as fast as her parents did, though she always just tells them that business is going well. She spends money frivolously doing whatever she wants, working for free, buying people things, giving stuff away, and pursuing personal interests, all while burning huge amounts of money in the process. It may be possible that she's actually losing money with the way she lives, but she has so much of it that it doesn't really matter to her. There's no need to try too hard to gain money or worry about losing some when it's all a drop in the bucket.Hopefully she never finds out that not even her wealth is actually infinite.
